Once a textile and manufacturing quarter on Cape Town's city fringe, Salt River now trades mainly in office space, much of it in converted warehouses and refurbished heritage buildings that appeal to creative studios, tech companies and agencies. A smaller industrial remainder survives in the workshops off Albert Road and Voortrekker Road. The suburb sits between Woodstock and Observatory, close to the N1 and N2 approaches, and Salt River station, a junction on the metro rail network, makes it one of the better rail-connected fringe locations.
